You may have already realized that there are a great many things that need to be looked into if weight loss is a goal for your diabetic condition. Unlike individuals who do not suffer from diabetes, those who already have diabetes will find that they need individualized programs to help them lose excess weight. There are many factors that need to be considered when it comes to diabetics; this is the real issue. Things like consumption of oral medication like Metformin and insulin dependency all affect weight loss and its success.

So while the best way you can go about weight loss is to consult your doctor, there are certainly a few tips that can be offered that may help you in your cause. In order to understand weight loss, you need to understand how the body works. Like it is in all things, this is the concept of input versus output. Usually, in order to lose weight you need to expend more than you consume. Remember that a pound of body fat is 3,500 calories. So a calorific deficit of 500 per day should be considered if you want to lose a pound of fat in a week.

But, this is not so simple. When it comes to diabetics, most of these rules still do apply. However, there are hormones like insulin that need to be considered. So, what doctors first need to see is how exactly you metabolize the glucose in your body and whether the type of insulin you are taking is effective. After that, you need to get on a diet that has low calories and high fiber. So the fewer calories you take in, the less weight you will put on. However, this needs to be sorted out after your insulin levels are taken into consideration.

While it is generally accepted that diabetics should be on a diet that takes into consideration natural foods like fruits and vegetables, exercise is also a vital component. Based on the amount of calories you are taking into your body, you need to monitor insulin levels as well. This will be imperative in getting the right amount of glucose to be metabolized. After all, you will need the right amount of food to get your glucose levels to a level that you can function with no difficulty.

When it comes to diabetes, there are two things that you need to be wary of. One is your glucose levels going dangerously low or your levels going dangerously high. The last thing that you need to be careful of is going into a coma. So considering all these factors, it is not advised that you consider a weight loss diet that is not substantiated if you are a diabetic. It could lead to complications that are serious and even stand as deadly. Rather, it is best that you be referred to a doctor to find out, the exactly right courses you should be on. All in all, what matters is that you lose weight in a safe and methodical way without putting your body under stress and damaging your health. Whichever way you look at it, remember that an expert opinion is certainly needed in ensuring that you lose weight the proper way.

First and foremost, it would be pertinent to define what gestational diabetes is. The latter is a condition in which high blood glucose levels are experienced during pregnancy. As far as statistics are concerned, out of all pregnancies there is a 4% chance of pregnant women developing this type of diabetes. As a matter of fact, all women, thanks to the hormonal imbalances that occur during pregnancy, suffer from some form of glucose intolerance at some level. While this level of glucose intolerance cannot be classed as being diabetic, it is best to be safe at this juncture.

While there is certainly a plethora of information that can be divulged here, it is hardly relevant and may be rather technical. At this juncture it is best to consider talking about the ideal diet that can help you if you are suffering from gestational diabetes. Basically, it is best that you consume three meals along with two snacks. Sticking to a consistent level of complex carbs during all meals is essential. As it is with diabetes, always avoid processed and refined foods. Rather stick to whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits and colorful vegetables.

What is significant when it comes to the gestational diet is that you get the right servings of vitamins and minerals. As a rule of thumb, try to opt for at least 4 servings of dairy produce so that you get the right degree of calcium. Additionally, you must also ensure that you get iron into your system, while vitamin C is also essential. Other vitamins and minerals that are necessary would be vitamin A and folic acid. There are of course many things that you must also avoid. For instance, caffeine and alcohol are said work best when avoided.

While all this information may seem alarming at the first instance, do not try at any point to diet. This could harm you and your child as well. Sticking to these guidelines would help you in the long run, yet it is advised to consult your doctor so that you get to know what type of a diet plan to be followed. Needless to say, this is merely just a microcosm of what needs to be considered when it comes to your health and well being. All in all, the most important thing to opt for is prevention.

There is a certain category of people who are at risk when it comes to gestational diabetes. Some of these factors include being overweight before becoming pregnant, being a member of certain ethnic groups, having impaired glucose tolerance, family history of diabetes, and giving birth to a still born baby. There are many other markers that need to be considered as well, but the ones that are mentioned herein stand as major markers to be considered.

Remember it is always best to prevent something before it happens. But if you already suffer from gestational diabetes, you can follow certain meal plans to ensure that you do not get affected by diabetic conditions later on in life. If you feel that you may be at risk, always ensure to consult your doctor and get a physical assessment done along with a diet plan that is suited to your needs.

New research conducted at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center indicates that a common and widely available test can be used to predict early death in those afflicted with diabetes. According to Donald W. Bowden, Ph.D., the director of the Center for Diabetes Research at Wake Forest Baptist and the lead investigator, “We’ve discovered that we can identify a subset of individuals within this high risk group who are at even higher risk.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, there are 25 million Americans or 8.3 percent of the population afflicted with diabetes. There is evidence to suggest that those suffering from diabetes stand a high risk of developing heart and vascular disease.

There are around 60 percent of diabetics who do succumb to a vascular event such as a stroke or heart attack. For this current study, Bowden and a team of researchers have been following approximately 1,500 diabetics in North Carolina for 13 years. Data on diabetes and how it affects a person’s health were gathered.

Bowden and his team were alarmed at the number of deaths that during the study. This led them to focus on a predictors of early death so that interventions or ways of to focus on care could be sought for those who were at the highest risk level. A high coronary artery calcium (CAC) score is a recognized as a predictor of heart disease. The score gives an indication as to the amount of calcified plaque that is present in the heart’s blood vessels.

This score can be assessed via a “gated” CT scan, which uses fewer x-rays than the usual CT scan and can be done within a mere 10 minutes without the need for injections. Such precautionary assessments are mandatory to prevent any casualties in those affected by diabetes, and as per Bowden this research show how simple and cheap measures can be utilized to achieve this.

The government in the Philippines is currently expanding the production of white corn, which is known to be low in the glycemic index, to boost food security and reduce the incidence of diabetes. According to Dr. Artemio M. Salazar, UPLB-IPB deputy director and National Corn RDE (Research, Development and Extension) Network head, producing white corn is not as capital-intensive as other crops since corn grows wherever there is rain.

The main focus is to provide a “mobile mini corn mill” to rural areas in the interior of the country. As Salazar states, “…there is a big demand for it because many Filipinos are now diabetics. And this is the perfect food for diabetics.”

The mobile corn mill costs a mere P100,000, which is much lower in price when compared to the high-capacity mills that are present in the market. While white corn will be promoted aggressively for daily nutrition and also livelihood in the rural uplands, this variety of corn will prove to be a health benefit amongst the residents in Metro Manila and even the other urban areas, which is known to have an alarming incidence of diabetes.

What is alarming is that while diabetes is on the rise so, too, is hypertension. According to a recent National Nutrition and Health Survey, 7.7 million Filipinos or 17.2 percent of the adult population suffer from hypertension. There is on 12 percent who are controlled as per the Philippine Heart Association. What this means is that there are approximately 6.8 million people who are in danger of developing fatal complications.

Since both diabetes and hypertension are inextricably linked, Health Secretary Enrique Ona reiterates that a healthy lifestyle should be considered, which takes into account physical activity and a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables along with foods that are low in the glycemic index, like white corn.

Information gleaned from a case-control study indicated that Pregravid quantities of body mass index (BMI), serum glucose, and prehypertension (also known as hypertension) had independent associations with the third type of diabetes that affects pregnant women i.e., gestational diabetes.

Women who had a BMI ?25 and a blood sugar level of 100 to 140 mg/dL boosted the risk of gestational diabetes by almost five times when compared with women who did not have abnormal measurements for both criteria. Monique M. Hedderson, PhD, of Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland, and co-authors stated in their findings that “In a multivariate model, pregravid hyperglycemia was a stronger predictor of subsequent gestational diabetes than overweight/obesity.”

It has been suggest that while the levels of glucose can certainly be considered a risk factor; obesity levels are certainly a factor that has more risk when it comes to developing gestational diabetes. This has been shown through the aforementioned case-control study.

Only 9% of those suffering from gestational diabetes suffered from pregravid mild hyperglycemia and there were 44% who were afflicted by obesity, while there were 4% who suffered from both conditions. When it comes to the risk factors, there are many for gestational diabetes, such as obesity, older maternal age, nonwhite race/ethnicity, family history of diabetes, and giving birth to a previous macrosomic infant.

Researchers examined the records of 199 women who had gestational diabetes and 381 age-matched women who did not. The study was conducted on women during the period between 1984 and 1996. Out of the 22,356 women who took part in the health maintenance program, 4,084 of them delivered babies during 2004. The candidates were of a mean age of 28 at the checkup, whereas they were 35 at delivery. African Americans accounted for 34%, Whites for 20% of the gestational diabetes cases. Asians on the other hand accounted for 30.2%, and Hispanics for 11.6%. The ethnic breakdown in the control group was 40% white, 36% African American, 12% Asian, and 10% Hispanic.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in support and conjunction with Amylin have embarked on a research collaboration to offer monetary support for clinical studies to examine the possibility of mixing Pramlintide, which is an analog of amylin (a human hormone), together with insulin to address those who are affected by Type 1 diabetes.

Pramlintide has been approved as an associated treatment in diabetics who use insulin therapy and could not achieve the right glucose levels despite using insulin therapy that is optimal.

Aaron Kowalski PhD, Assistant Vice President of Treatment Therapies, JDRF stated that “Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease that requires blood sugar testing and insulin administration multiple times a day in order to keep blood glucose levels in check.” The analysis of this combination therapy has been called “exciting”, simply because if it is found to be successful, then it may potentially assist patients in achieving stricter glucose control minus the increase in treatment complexity.

According to Matthew Riddle PhD, professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Clinical Nutrition, Oregon Health & Science University, those who are afflicted with Type 1 diabetes are not capable of producing amylin or insulin. The prospect of insulin replacement and even basal/bolus therapy would mean that the management of blood glucose levels can be challenging. Pramlintide can, however, stabilize blood sugar levels so that these levels are within the normal range.

At present, those who utilize Pramlintide must administer their insulin therapy separately, via an insulin pump or injections. A therapy that is co-formulated is used to harness the advantages of both hormones. It may better emulate the pancreas’ physiology and simplify those decisions that deal with dosing. Finally, according to Riddle, this may decrease the issues associated with daily treatment for diabetics who’re finding it difficult to manage diabetes, and improve their chances of achieving their treatment goals.

According to researchers, a certain cholesterol lowering drug that is taken in combination with an anti-depressant, taken by over one million people in America, could lead to a spike in blood sugar levels.

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Vanderbilt University believe that the anti-cholesterol drug Pravachol and the anti-depressant Paxil do not have the effect if taken separately. This interaction was discovered by assessing reports of adverse events present in a US Food and Drug Administration database, and comparing them to electronic medical records of the aforementioned medical institutions.

The researchers established that an average increase of 19 milligrams per deciliter in blood glucose were present after initiating the treatment in 135 non-diabetic patients. However, 14 people with diabetes who started the treatment experienced a greater increase of 48 mg/dl. A spike in blood sugar is enough to push a person who is pre-diabetic into full blown diabetes.

This assumption was put to the test with lab mice that were fed a high-calorie diet that was also high in fat. This put them in a state that was pre-diabetic and insulin resistant. These pre-diabetic mice had their blood glucose levels soar from 128 mg/dl to 193 mg/dl when they were put on the two drugs for three weeks.

According to Russ Altman, professor of medicine at Stanford believes that drug interactions of this nature occur most of the time in the human body. However, since “they are not part of the approval process by the Food and Drug Administration, we can only learn about them after the drugs are on the market.” Altman believes that there are between 500,000 and one million people taking this combo simultaneously. Patients should understand this situation and its effects on blood sugar, which would allow a diabetic to better understand his or her condition. Importantly it could also prevent a person from reaching a state of full blown diabetes as well.

Researchers have reported in two different studies that the genes, which control lipid levels, could lead to an early prediction of diabetes as well as heart disease and atherosclerosis. Joanne E. Curran, PhD, of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, and colleagues found that in one study, the lipid genes, known as dihydroceramide (dhCer) coded by a region on chromosome 3 seemed to be a diabetes risk factor irrespective of what the insulin and glucose levels were.

In a different study, a risk score of effects by genetic variants that were common predicted arterial wall thickness and carotid plaque as well as coronary heart disease. This was reported by Sara Willems, PhD, of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and her colleagues.

Willems stated, “As our knowledge of genetic variation increases, preclinical genetic screening tools might enhance the prediction and prevention of clinical events.” Donna Arnett, PhD, MSPH, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, and a spokesperson for the American Heart Association believes that conventional clinical risk factors can lead to diabetes and heart disease, however, adding genetic tools to this mix could be helpful especially in ascertaining how to actually approach prevention in patients who are considered to be at risk by conventional measures.

The group headed by Willems utilized the Erasmus Rucphen Family Study and the Rotterdam Study, which is population-based, to assess top lipid-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been identified by a genome-wide meta-analysis recently.

The studies took into account 10,212 individuals along with measurements of plaques and carotid intima media thickness (IMT). An analysis of one million SNPs in quantitative and genome-wide association analyses showed that lipid genes were inherited. There are 128 lipid species, which has the ability to predict diabetes incidence over a decade of follow-up. As per the study, dihydroceramide 18:0 is the ideal predictor of progression to diabetes and was significantly heritable and more common amongst diabetics.

While it is widely accepted that there are more people suffering from Type 2 diabetes than Type 1 diabetes, the latter is also on the rise as of recent years.

Selecta CEO Werner Cautreels informed FierceBiotech that the new pact is at a very early stage of development. Selecta’s main program is a nicotine vaccine, which is designed to assist with the cessation of smoking and relapse. The Phase I study funded with a $3 million grant from the NIH is expected to come to fruition during the fourth quarter of 2011 and finish halfway through 2012.

JDRF CSO Richard Insel M.D, stated that the vaccine research is one of the approaches that can be considered promising, which would be able to prevent or stop the beta cell-specific autoimmunity that is relevant to Type 1 diabetes. Insel went onto state, “…we are excited to be teaming up with Selecta to support the development of this next-generation of vaccine technology.” During the past three years the developer, under the tutelage of Omid Farokhzad as well as Langer and Ulrich von Andrian of Harvard Medical School, has been setting up a synthetic vaccine particle platform.

Selecta had announced that it had welcomed Peter Keller into the fold as vice president of business development and alliance management. Keller will be responsible for assessing and sorting out some new deals.

The biotech, which according to Cautreels has raised well over $33 million and has made a hiring of 26 staff members has been busy exploring other pacts for a technology that has created quite a great deal of interest at government agencies, pharmacuticals companies in addition to other non-profits like the JDFR.

According to new research, a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet could not lead to complications in those who have diabetes risk factors. The study’s author Dr. James Shikany stated that usually people reduce the fat in their diet and then replace it with carbohydrates, “There was some concern that the increased carbohydrate intake might lead to if not increased diabetes itself…changes that over time could lead to diabetes”.

According to the results of the study, both diabetes and associated disease risks would need to look into the different kinds of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that we consume. The study assessed 2,300 postmenopausal women that looked into the effects of hormone therapy and diet on disease risks.

Approximately 900 of the candidates were instructed to lower their total fat intake so that fat consisted of 20 percent of total calorie intake. So you are basically restricted to 44 grams of fat when it comes to a 2,000-calorie diet. The candidates were also told to have more servings of fruit, vegetable, and grains and they got support from nutritionists as well. The remaining 1,400 women served as a comparison group where they were not given any nutritional advice or told to change their dietary habits.

The women were monitored for 6 years where their blood sugar and insulin levels were taken into account to look for any sign of diabetes. After just 1 year, women who were on the low-fat diet lost more weight versus the comparison group and experienced larger decreases in insulin and blood sugar levels. By 6 years the measure on both groups were similar. Researchers ascertained that the high-carb, low-fat diet did not increase the risk of women developing diabetes.

However, Dr. David Jenkins, head of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto believes that consuming more protein and fat from vegetable sources can help avoid heart disease and diabetes risk factors.
