Diabetics Are More Likely To Get A Heart Attack
According to new research, people who are afflicted with diabetes are more likely to die from heart-related ailments such as heart attacks. Brittany Bennett, a Registered Dietitian from the Wyoming Medical Center, states how high blood sugar can lead to more fatty material build up in arteries. Prolonged and extensive build up of such fat could eventually lead to a fatality, unless prevention of such a situation is sought after. The statistics are sobering. Bennett adds that diabetics are four times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack than anyone else.
As far as present statistics are concerned, close to 3 diabetics will die from some form of cardiovascular disease. In
addition, it is the combination of high blood sugar and high cholesterol that puts most diabetics at risk. While it is widely accepted that the risk of diabetes certainly increases with age, the aspect of lifestyle does have a bearing as well. Those who are mostly at risk include people in high-stress jobs, those leading a sedentary life style and those who graze on junk food. Bennett further advises taking the ABC test for checking the Hemoglobin A1C blood test, Blood pressure and Cholesterol. These would give a good indication of diabetic risk and what preventive measures could be sought after.
The usual preventive measures are to eat a high-fiber diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, at least 30 minutes of regular exercise is advised. Smokers should immediately quit smoking since the risk is much higher for this category to get cardiovascular disease. The best course of action for diabetics is to regularize the levels of blood sugar in their systems. Such less sugar spikes will most certainly result in less fat deposits in blood vessels and arteries.
