Since intake of food affects the body’s need for insulin and ability of insulin to lower blood sugar, so the diet is the foundation-stone of diabetes treatment. Today diabetes doctors no longer recommend a single diet for diabetes. For example, a type 2 diabetic who may be overweight and insulin-resistant may need to have a different diet for diabetics than a thin- type 1 diabetic.

American diabetes dietary has taken steps for healthy consuming for all Americans and they are as follows:

  • Fat with saturation and trans-fatty acids should be avoided.
  • Dietary cholesterol should be limited.
  • Sufficient amount of fiber-rich foods like whole grains and fresh vegetables and fruits should be consumed.
  • Salt should be reduced.
  • Moderate protein based food should be consumed.

Balanced foods for diabetes recommend the following ratios:

  • 10% to 20% of calories provided by protein
  • Not more than 30% is provided by fat, and
  • 60% should be supplied by carbohydrates

As we know that there are two major types of diabetes, i.e. Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes and each type of diabetes diet differs from another. Type 1 diabetes diet is mainly to do something than just eat ‘healthily’. Type 2 diabetes diet focus is on management plan.

If you are suffering from type 1 diabetes, then your body is no longer producing insulin, hence you have to inject it yourself. Guidelines for diabetes of type 1 are:

  • Eating a healthy and nutritious diet
  • Target to eat relatively consistent amount in day-to-day life
  • Food labels should be used
  • the Glycaemic Index should be used
  • a potential effect of fat and protein should be considered diet for diabetes
  • blood glucose monitoring should be used to assess the effects of different types of food
  • you should know, when the insulin acts
  • a calorie counter should be maintained for assessing the carbohydrate, fat and protein content

However if you are the sufferer of type 2 diabetes, then the following should be maintained:

  • should have knowledge about different food types and eat healthy and nutritious diet
  • you should consider, what you are eating and how it may effect your blood glucose level
  • a calorie counter should be maintained for assessing the carbohydrate, fat and protein content
  • Food labels should be used
  • the Glycaemic Index should be used
  • saturated fats should be cut down
  • alcohol and salt should be cut down
  • you should increase your activity level

Diabetic food pyramid is designed by the American Dietetic Association and American Diabetes Association. The main content in the diabetic food pyramid are carbohydrates and proteins, because this type of food affects the food glucose levels, which in turn is the main concern in diets for diabetics.
