The relationship between the food and diabetic is one of the prominent relationships that are known for hundreds of years. Whatever consumed by the diabetic patients may have an impact on them depending on which level of GI and carbohydrate the food contain. Among many fruits that have an impact on diabetic patients, watermelon is one with a lot of misunderstanding.
There are several reasons for this misunderstanding as information about watermelon consumption is sourced from a few different sources. Earlier researches showed that watermelon consumption has a drastic impact on diabetic patients as watermelon consist of a higher GI. Therefore, doctors advised patients to fully avoid watermelon from consuming.
Later, researches indicated that moderate consumption of watermelon do not do any harm and actually do some good. But the rule of thumb was ‘moderate level consumption’. Since watermelon contains a low level of carbohydrate, the risk is less for increasing the blood sugar level drastically. Anyways, if watermelon is consumed, the patient may notice an increment of blood sugar level. This is again differs person to person. Some patients might notice a sharp increment of blood glucose level and some might notice a less increment.
If you were diagnosed for diabetics recently and trying watermelon for the first time as a diabetic patient, then you need to start slowly. Start with small amount of watermelon and measure your blood glucose increment. This will give you an indication on the volume that is safe to be consumed. Do not stop the testing with watermelon at once. Monitor your blood sugar level each time you consume watermelon for a long time and get an idea about how the blood sugar behaves.
Many of the diabetic patients who consume watermelon instruct others to consume in a moderate level. After all, watermelon is a wonderful fruit which cleanse your digestion system.
