Well, you are pregnant and the joys of motherhood are waiting for you. Your body is going through innumerable changes while it is nurturing the baby inside you. You know that you need more nutrients, energy and rest, to let the baby grow.

However you are suffering from type 1 diabetes and are worried about it. With the release of specific hormones there are more than ordinary changes in the diabetic mother’s blood sugar very quickly. You should keep a close watch on your blood sugar. If your blood sugar goes up very fast you must act fast.

We all know that exercises have an important role to play in the sugar level of your body. The problems that you were facing earlier may get aggravated. If you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before hand then exercises hold a very important part in your pregnancy. It is actually advisable to plan your pregnancy. Don’t go for sudden pregnancy. When you plan your pregnancy you get an opportunity to bring your blood sugar level to normal range.

Before your pregnancy is due you must have already embarked on an exercise regime. It could be walking, cycling; swimming etc. In any case you must not be doing any vigorous exercises. Now that you have become pregnant you obviously won’t embark on any new regime but you should actually consult a doctor before starting any new type of exercise. Only a qualified medical practitioner can guide you regarding your exercise routines and how much can the exercise regime affect you.

Normally speaking, light exercises like walking or taking a stroll don’t do any harm as such but if you develop any complications like bleeding or a low lying uterus then it is best that you consult your doctor before starting or doing any type of physical activity. They will provide you with the appropriate guidelines keeping in mind the condition of your baby and you. As it is, normal people need care and guidance during pregnancy but if you are suffering from diabetes of any type, say type 1 or type 2, or gestational diabetes, you need more frequent visits to the doctor and more specialized guidance.

The exercises which others can safely do during pregnancy need medical approval if you suffer from various other problems like hypertension (high blood pressure), any type of kidney, eye, or heart problems, any type of damage to the nerves and any damage to the large or small blood vessels. These problems may indicate that the sugar level in your blood has gone up. The doctor may have to adjust the insulin dose accordingly.

However generally speaking since exercises have a deep impact during pregnancy with diabetes type 1 and it is always advisable to go for low intensity exercises like swimming, low level aerobics, walking etc. You should not start any new strenuous exercises and always consult a doctor.
