Diabetes is one topic that seems to be in most of the conversations of today. Be it a doctor, a patient, a parent or a child, talk about diabetes sneaks its way into most conversations. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the word and this trend continues into the future. Fortunately for mankind, the public and doctors alike are now taking an interest in getting to know about this disease and ways of controlling it. Even though diabetes is a topic which has begun to be talked about from the recent times, this disease has a long history. Discovered as far back as in 1552 BC, it has been a threat to mankind from times even before that. It was discovered in 1870s by a French physician that a person’s diet and weight had a direct relationship to diabetes. Thus was the beginning of diabetic weight loss diets.

For a person suffering from diabetes, or for a person in the diabetes risk category, the diet is something that should be given a great consideration to. The diet should be even more highlighted in the case of obese diabetic patients as well as those suffering from obesity in general. When reading this a person might wonder why an obese diabetic patient has to follow specifically a diabetic weight loss diet. The answer to this query is simply that not only does the diet have to take into account the issue of weight, but also the diabetic condition in the body. A normal weight loss diet and a diabetic weight loss diet are different from each other and should be treated separately. Following a diabetic weight loss diet also depends on the type of diabetes you have. A diabetic weight loss diet should be followed by those suffering from type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to diabetes weigh loss diets, the first thing that should be mentioned is that skipping meals is not an option. Skipping meals will not only lead to overindulgence during other meals, but also drastic fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Having established that skipping meals is not a wise option when following a diabetic weight loss diet, we can now explore the main constituents and components of such a diet. Even though this diet is a weight loss diet, it should be nutritious and well balanced. Thus it should consist of food from all the food categories. The important thing at this point is to ensure that the foods from each of these categories are low in sugar levels.

The most important part of a diabetic weight loss diet is controlling the intake of carbohydrates with high glycemic index. Foods such as white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and certain fruits and vegetables should be avoided as they are capable of increasing the blood glucose levels rapidly. In place of these one can consume foods such as lentils, beans, broccoli, spinach and berries. Fiber rich foods such as oats, oat bran should also be made part of the diabetic weight loss diet. In addition to all these measures, drinking plenty of water and daily exercises are an important part of diabetic weight loss diets.

When it comes to the concept of meal plans, the best thing you can do, if you are diabetic, is to consult your doctor. The matter of fact here is that meals should never be something that you should create on your own until you know your true status. Ideally, what you must remember is that food is something that needs to be looked into almost fanatically if you are diabetic. While conventionally, diabetics were just given three main meals a day, the current medical research has extended optimum meal plan to three main meals and two snacks a day.

What you need to remember is that while there is a great deal of focus on WHAT to eat when you are a diabetic, it is just as important to consider WHEN to eat, as well. If you are insulin dependent then, you really do need to ensure that you have the right amount of food spaced out strategically so that the food is metabolized fully. While tailor made meal plans can only be fully substantiated by your personal doctor, we can shed insight in to what types of food is ideal for a diabetic and when exactly they should be consumed.

There is that age old adage – you are what you eat – that is rather pertinent here. If you have been a diabetic for long you will remember that the type of food you eat is the key. You will have been advised to give up on refined and processed foods along with sugar for sure. Needless to say, this is just but the first step in ensuring that you get back up on your feet, metaphorically speaking. The reason for such demands being that our bodies have been made to consume natural food such as fruits and vegetables, which is what is desired in the first place.

Your meals should consist of nutrient dense foods along with fiber. Mainly what you need to remember is that fruits and vegetables are the perfect combination when it comes to a diabetic diet. While there is a great deal of groaning and moaning when it comes to such types of food, the truth here is that there is a great deal of inventive things that you can do to enjoy the right foods. For instance, think of recipes such as fruit trifle or Caesar salad. Most of these dishes are mainstream and are enjoyed by even those who are not diabetic.

So while there are main recipes out there that you can certainly enjoy, you must remember that you also need to ensure that you get hold of the right plan to subsist on. For example, depending on your individual needs, you could have just three main meals or five meals with two of them being snacks. Another factor that is sure to affect your meal plan would be the type of insulin that you are on. Additionally, if you are not insulin dependent then you must remember that your meal plans may be far different than those who are insulin dependent.

All in all, while there are online tools and charts that can help you track what your meals should be like, it is best that you get advice from your personal doctor. At the end of the day, your individual case will differ from others and will need to be treated with special care so following a general meal plan will not help.

If you want to avoid a problem the best way you can go about it is to arm yourself with knowledge. This can easily be done thanks to the vast degree of access that you can afford via cyberspace. However, diabetes and diabetic prevention is something that is easily attainable provided you know what needs to be done. While there are certainly two factors that determine who is largely at risk of developing diabetes, there are many external factors that can affect these two main reasons. But before we do get ahead of ourselves, let’s unravel the two factors.

While type 1 diabetes is generally something that affects those who are genetically predisposed, there is also a chance that they could get it via infection as well. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is something that can be controlled more easily. While genetic predisposition is also one main reason why many people develop this strain of diabetes, the other main factor is lifestyle. Even if you do have a family history of diabetes, changing your lifestyle can help you prevent diabetes in the long term quite easily.

Lifestyle is certainly something that needs quite a bit of discussion. First and foremost it needs to be said that a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables need to be embraced. It is best that you keep refined and processed foods to a minimum. While mentioning the aspect of diet is certainly pertinent there are so many factors that affect our eating habits, which we will get into shortly. The other thing that we need to get sorted out in our lives is exercise. There are too many instances where we end up sitting on a couch, eating potato chips and watching television day in and day out. This is something that needs to change.

Ideally what you need to do is to ensure that you get at least 45 minutes of exercise three days of the week. Sure there are enough complaints about not having enough time in one’s life, but this is an effort that you do need to make. The best thing that you can do is to gather a group of friends and find a sport that you all love. It could be tennis or swimming. Either way, it would be the perfect way to unwind, de-stress and socialize.

As mentioned previously, when it comes to diet in order to prevent diabetes, there are many factors that prevent you from having a proper one. Our society is geared in such a way where we are always in a rush and we end up eating fast food. This really is the perfect recipe for disaster, which should be avoided at all costs. The best way you can stick to healthy meals is to preplan all of them. This way you will not have an excuse to end up grazing on junk. Factors such as lack of sleep and stress do contribute to diabetes as well. How this happens is that we end up craving that sugar rush, which means that we end up reaching out for sugar laden soda or candy bar.

While we may know what we should be doing in order to lead healthier lives, the truth is that sometimes we just don’t do it. This is where we need to harness our inner discipline and enthusiasm for our health.

According to results of a study presented at the American Urological Association (AUA) 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting, men who suffer from diabetes are more likely to have the need of invasive second- and third-line therapies to control erectile dysfunction (ED) compared to those men who do not suffer from diabetes. Such therapies also include surgical intervention as well.

An analysis of a large database of medical claims indicated that diabetic men were almost 50% likelier when compared to non-diabetic men to undergo secondary therapies such as penile suppositories or injectables, all within a mere 5 years of an erectile dysfunction diagnosis.

As per Thomas J. Walsh, MD, assistant professor of urology at the University of Washington – School of Medicine in Seattle, “Our data show that men with diabetes have a more refractory treatment course [for ED] than non-diabetics.” For the study, data on 136,306 individuals from the Innovus i3 database, which has in excess of claims on over 30 million individuals in America, were gauged.

According to the study, diabetics were 1.6 times likelier than non-diabetics to require second-line therapies and 2.1 times likelier to require third-line therapies within 5 years of an ED diagnosis.

The development to second- and third-line therapies was likelier within the first half year of an ED diagnosis. Tobias Köhler, MD, MPH, assistant professor of andrology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, and AUA spokesperson, believes that first-line treatment for ED is largely ineffective in diabetics. The majority of these patients would need to undergo second and third-line therapies to effectively get rid of ED. The latter exacerbates in time since peripheral nerve damage worsens and there is a subsequent lack of blood flow that is present in the penis. A change in diet along with adoption of an exercise regime has been known to improve most cases of ED.

According to new research, a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet could not lead to complications in those who have diabetes risk factors. The study’s author Dr. James Shikany stated that usually people reduce the fat in their diet and then replace it with carbohydrates, “There was some concern that the increased carbohydrate intake might lead to if not increased diabetes itself…changes that over time could lead to diabetes”.

According to the results of the study, both diabetes and associated disease risks would need to look into the different kinds of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that we consume. The study assessed 2,300 postmenopausal women that looked into the effects of hormone therapy and diet on disease risks.

Approximately 900 of the candidates were instructed to lower their total fat intake so that fat consisted of 20 percent of total calorie intake. So you are basically restricted to 44 grams of fat when it comes to a 2,000-calorie diet. The candidates were also told to have more servings of fruit, vegetable, and grains and they got support from nutritionists as well. The remaining 1,400 women served as a comparison group where they were not given any nutritional advice or told to change their dietary habits.

The women were monitored for 6 years where their blood sugar and insulin levels were taken into account to look for any sign of diabetes. After just 1 year, women who were on the low-fat diet lost more weight versus the comparison group and experienced larger decreases in insulin and blood sugar levels. By 6 years the measure on both groups were similar. Researchers ascertained that the high-carb, low-fat diet did not increase the risk of women developing diabetes.

However, Dr. David Jenkins, head of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto believes that consuming more protein and fat from vegetable sources can help avoid heart disease and diabetes risk factors.

U.S. News & World just released its annual “Best Diet” rankings where they weighed in on the most effective diets present. The magazine stated on their website that the old-school belief that one diet fits everyone is erroneous. The DASH program, which is also known as the “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension” diet came out on top against 19 other diets such as Jenny Craig, Atkins, and Slim-Fast, to win the coveted title of “Best Diets Overall”.

However, when it came to dropping those extra pounds of fat, Weight Watchers came in at No. 1, followed very closely by Jenny Craig, while the Raw Food Diet came in at a well-respected third place. While the DASH diet was unanimously voted as the best overall diet, the Mediterranean Diet came in at second place.

Researchers assessed the profiles of 20 diets, which underwent review by a board of 22 experts, who were well versed in the field of diet and nutrition, heart disease and diabetes. The rankings were ascertained based on scores the following categories: ability to prevent or manage diabetes, short-term weight loss, long-term weight loss, nutritional completeness, easiness to follow, and to manage heart disease. Each diet also vied in the following categories: best commercial diet plan, best overall diet, best weight-loss, best heart-healthy diet and best diabetes diet.

The DASH diet came out on top in the best diabetes diet category, followed closely by the Mayo Clinic diet. The Ornish Diet was the best for heart-healthy diets while the TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) diet captured the second position.

The magazine went onto state that while the aspect of exercise is adhered to varying degrees in some diets, the main focus should be on food. According to the figures from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 34 percent of American adults aged 20 and over who are overweight, while an equal number suffer from obesity.

According to a new study, moms who are overweight and who lose weight after their first pregnancy stand a less chance of developing diabetes during their second pregnancy. The researchers also found out that those women who gained weight between pregnancies had an increased risk of developing diabetes on their second pregnancy compared to those women who maintained a stable weight.

The results did not surprise Samantha Ehrlich, the research project manager at the Division of Research at Kaiser Permanente and the lead author on the study. She stated, when it came to those women who were not pregnant, “A lot of people have shown that lifestyle intervention to help people lose weight can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes“. Gestational diabetes affects four percent of women who are pregnant.

Ehrlich assessed medical records that covered 22,000 women over a 10-year period that went through two pregnancies using the facilities at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. There were forty-six out of 1,000 women who were affected by gestational diabetes during their initial pregnancy, while 52 out of 1,000 women were affected by it during their second pregnancies. In addition, there were 18 out of every 1,000 women who were affected by diabetes during both pregnancies.

The danger of being affected by diabetes during the second pregnancy gradually increased with the degree of weight gained after the first pregnancy. According to Dr. Eduardo Villamor at the University of Michigan, who previously found this link believes that women should maintain a healthy weight before and after pregnancy. Reiterating this fact, Ehrlich believes that the findings indicated that women should avoid being overweight or obese before getting pregnant.

While a pilot program has been started to help mothers get back to their pre-baby weight, the challenge is that while it may seem easy on paper, it is a lot harder to do in reality.

The candidate drug Lyxumia, produced by drug maker Sanofi, is designed to combat diabetes Mellitus Type 2. Lyxumia or lixisenatide, when combined with basal insulin, reduces blood glucose levels in Type 2 diabetes patients and would lead to weight loss as well. Lyxumia belongs to the GLP-1 class of drugs, which encourage insulin release when blood sugar levels become overly high. However, as of now, Lyxumia has not received government approval for sale from most countries. Sanofi-Aventis manufactured Lyxumia from Zealand Pharma and its subsequent treatment could be a possible profit churner for the company, which could see it being named as the world’s top diabetes treatment corporation.

While the results of the most current trial were similar in outcome to the test results that were achieved in Asia, researchers went onto mention how patients that suffer from diabetes Type 2, who are inclined to have the disease since they are overweight, also ended up losing a great deal of weight while on Lyxumia. Jeffries analysts stated in a research note that, “Importantly, in our view, this trial did demonstrate significant weight loss”.

The Jeffries report went onto suggest how Sanofi-Aventis should ensure commercial success with the Lantus combination. The latter is the insulin produced by Sanofi-Aventis, which was the highest-selling treatment of the company that made them 3.5 billion euros.

Sanofi-Aventis reiterates that the blood glucose levels of patients who took a “Lyxumia / basal insulin combination” fell rather considerably. Additionally, Sanofi-Aventis mentioned how this benefit did not lead to any risk of increasing hypoglycemia, when compared to a control group who were given placebos.

However, the results did show up some moderate side effects for those who took the combination of Lyxumia and basal insulin. Patients experienced side effects, with nausea being the most uncomfortable, which led to some patients abandoning the trial.

There is great news for diabetics who do love almonds. While there has been a great deal of evidence to show that people who do eat nuts like cashew, walnuts and almond could in fact reverse the events of aging, it seems there are other benefits too, especially when it comes to almonds. According to a new study that was conducted at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, almonds could prevent heart disease and diabetes. The latter is linked to physical inactivity and obesity, not to mention that it could lead to heart disease, blindness and a host of other conditions.

Almond rich diet prevents diabetes

This new study indicated that a nutritious diet, which includes almonds, could help to recover insulin sensitivity. One of the reasons behind this chemistry could be the fact that almonds are high in fiber and take a considerable degree of energy to be digested. Additionally, almonds could also help decrease LDL-cholesterol levels in people who suffer from pre-diabetes. The latter is a condition where people have higher than normal blood sugar levels but is not high enough to be classified as being diabetic. If diabetes is not controlled, the sugar remains in the blood for a long time thereby damaging vital organs.

While eating almonds alone would not be enough when it comes to curbing the onset of diabetes perse, it certainly does help in tandem with other lifestyle changes. Certified dieticians do promote good eating habits along with a level of physical activity. Ideally, diet should consist of more fiber and vitamin rich foods such as vegetables and fruits.

It is best to avoid junk food along with drinks that contain copious amounts of sugar. Additionally, it is advised for people to get into an exercise regime where they can control their blood sugar levels along with a decent diet.

A study that was published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine concluded that 50-year old diabetics could live 6 years less. Compare this to long-term smoking, which has been known to reduce life span by a decade. The information used was medical data of over 820,000 individuals from close to 100 studies across both North America and Europe. According to Dr. John Danesh of the Cambridge University in the United Kingdom the research results are alarming. While diabetes has been linked to heart conditions exclusively, Danesh stated how this disease is “associated with a much broader range of health implications than previously suspected.”

Diabetes

Other noteworthy research points include that there is a higher rate of suicide among diabetics along with depression. Diabetes is known to cause blurred vision and even loss of feelings in the legs, thereby leading to falls. Although not conclusive, diabetics stand a risk of 25% when it comes to dying of cancer including illnesses that affected the lung and kidneys. All this information suggests, according to Danesh, the need to “prevent diabetes” at all possible costs. This disease is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the US, with an excess of 26 million being affected.

Dr. Alvin Powers, a diabetes specialist at the Vanderbilt University called it “another reason to try to normalize blood glucose in people who have diabetes”. Conventionally changing one’s diet and adopting an exercise regime that focuses on walking or some form of cardiovascular exercise will make a difference. Those who are affected with diabetes should seek medical intervention. This is serious especially given the fact that there are 7 million undiagnosed cases in the US alone. As Dr. Richard Bergenstal of Park Nicollet in Minneapolis stated, “Diabetes is a serious condition. We often don’t quite think about it quite that way.”
