‘Nick Jones Diabetes’ has almost become a brand. Sure enough Nick Jones is cute and more popular these days. This young singer was diagnosed as having type one diabetes in year 2005. There are thousands of articles written and published on Internet and other media about him and his diabetes. What is so different about Nick from others?

Actually there are a few specialties when it comes to Nick Jones and diabetes. First one is that he has type one diabetes that needs extensive attentions. If someone has type one diabetes, then they need to be very careful of their condition and so they can have a normal life. What is normal to us is not normal to Nick Jones. He is a performer so his requirements to become normal are totally different from ours. As a performer, he needs to very energetic on the stage performing for hours. This requires high levels of blood sugar level for sustaining the energy. When the performer is a diabetic, the situation becomes worst. To become energetic, he needs more blood sugar and since he is a diabetic, he cannot afford to have high levels of blood sugar. So then, how does he manage his condition? That is why Nick Jones case is a special case in the work of diabetes.

When people become victims of diabetes, they try to minimize their social activities and try to be cornered. They keep away from the lifestyle that they used to follow. But in the case of Nick Jones, he continued his lifestyle while controlling his condition of diabetes thoroughly. This is one good example for youngsters, which shows that diabetes is not the end of their active lifestyle. Since Nick Jones is a performer, he takes extreme measurements to control his condition. As media says, he pricks his fingers twelve times a day to make sure he does not exceed the limits of blood sugar levels. There is a dedicated team (including health professionals) of Nick Jones team when he performs on stage. This is just for making sure that he is safe at any given moment. Nick Johns revels that he uses a catheter and an insulin pump while he performs for keeping the insulin levels stabilized.

As Nick Jones has said in one of the media interviews, he has had an emotional breakdown when he first heard the news about his condition. Then he has made his mind to fight against it and achieve what he wanted to achieve. Now he has become a strong advocate for fighting against diabetes and asks others not to themselves get down due to diabetes. So, Nick Jones diabetes story is one of the inspiring stories of fighting against diabetes.

I’m sure you have heard that exercising can significantly improve the health of people suffering from diabetes. This is especially true if the sufferer is classified as a type II diabetic.

The simple mechanism behind exercising having a positive impact on diabetes is that when someone exercises their body consumes oxygen twenty or so times more than usual. Consumption of oxygen is also elevated in the working muscles therefore; the muscles use more glucose to meet their increased energy levels. Thus as a result, the blood glucose level of the individual’s blood drops significantly.

Additionally, exercising improves the action of insulin in the peripheral muscles. Therefore, you will find the body using insulin more efficiently. In the case of older generations, scientists claim that decreased sensitivity in individuals comes from lack of physical exercise. Therefore, despite the age if one could involve in physical activities that exercises the body, he/she will reap effective and healthy results for years to come.

While it is very important to keep yourself healthy with exercises, it is even more important to know the correct way of doing exercises that is suitable for your condition and the best times to exercise.

Scientists at Quebec Heart Institute claim that the best time to exercise is after meals as opposed to exercising in the morning after fasting. They arrived at this conclusion by studying the impact on the blood glucose response followed by the amount of time that passed since the previous meal. Their observation was that the greatest reductions were shown only after 4 or 5 hours after the last meal. So deriving from the evidence, we can safely determine the best time to exercise as 5 or 6 pm if you have lunch at 1 pm.

As per the types of exercises that should be used by a person with diabetes, both aerobic and anaerobic exercises would be suitable. However, it is always best to seek advice from an instructor depending on the gravity of your condition and depending on any side effects or complications you experience.

Here’s a glimpse of the course of action that will follow once you are recommended by a physician to get started on insulin treatment.

The needles used to inject insulin are very fine and sharp however, most injections are said to be virtually painless. Understandably, the word ‘injections’ usually make patients apprehensive. Not to forget the underlying meaning that it is going to take a whole life time to get rid of the injections once you get started. At least for majority of cases, that is how the case looks like. For this reason, hospitals and clinics usually administer lessons in injection technique for beginners.

Insulin is usually administered by a pen injection device but can be drawn up from a vial into special plastic insulin syringes marked in units (100 U in 1 ml), as well. The common places in the body to be injected are abdomen, thighs or upper arm where the needle is usually inserted in to its full length. There are five common types of needles available to be used with pen injection devices. Adults usually use a 30 gauge 8 mm needle while children use a 31 gauge 6 mm needle. When it comes to the pen devices, they come in two types of reusable and disposable.

It is an important requirement to change the injection site regularly to prevent areas of lipohypertrophy. You may have heard that insulin absorption defers from person to person. This notion in fact is correct. The rate of insulin absorption usually depends on local subcutaneous blood flow and is accelerated by exercise, local massage or a warm environment. Absorption from the abdomen is more rapid than from the arm and it is slowest when the injection is taken on the thigh.

So as it is clear by now, everybody needs careful training for a life with insulin and the easiest and the most comfortable way to achieve this is to get some training. If you have a friend who is a trained nurse, you may find some consolation and seek advice from him/her. Either way, it is very important that you learn the techniques properly and feel comfortable about it because insulin will only take you a long way if you take insulin properly and take it a long way.

We will further explore ways and means of how to parent a diabetic teenager. As we discussed in the previous article, by now we understand that it is not an easy task. So it always comes in handy to know what to expect from your teenager. Know that he/she is also going through a tough patch in life to cope up with diabetes, as much as or more than you are.

Living with diabetes is a life transforming experience however; you don’t have to make it a traumatized experience for your child nor to yourself. It is totally inappropriate to jump on his/her back every time the blood glucose levels go high. You may naturally suspect that he/she has eaten something out of the scheduled meal or that he/she hasn’t exercised enough. However, the matter of fact could be that the levels have sprung high due to upcoming growth sprouts. Always remember that your child is a teenager and that his/her body is subjected to momentarily hormonal changes out of no reason.

Understand that peer pressure works miracles for teenagers therefore if you can find another teenager from the neighborhood who is also suffering from diabetes; make arrangements for them to spend time together. It is always easier for your child to grow up with peer support rather than without it.

Some parents discriminate their children in very subtle ways without intending to do so. However, the outcome almost always turns out to harmful to the child in one way or another. Therefore, stop treating your child as a person with illness. Stop materializing the diabetic condition. Never bring it out in front of friends or family in an attempt to belittle the child. Don’t even make it the topic of discussion at the family dinner table because your child should not feel ‘different’ just because he/she has a medical condition.

Remember that creating a distance in your relationship with your teen child is the worst thing that can happen to you. Teenage is a period where they experience a lot of emotions and entanglements such as identity crisis. So don’t ever give an opportunity for your teenager to get behind others just because of a medical condition. After all, it is not life threatening if handled carefully. Instead, encourage him/her to involve in things he/she excels in so that he/she will grow up feeling good about him/her despite what goes on inside his/her body.

We all know that adolescence is a period of complications when it comes to both physical and mental stability. The bodily hormonal changes are the main culprit and if your teenager has diabetes, it may be even worse news for you. This may be so, because hormones involved with growth will cause blood sugar levels to swing up and down momentarily. So here are some tips on how to handle your teen suffering with diabetes.

Firstly, it is important to avoid clashes of interest. Therefore you need to be very clear on what is good for your teenager and what is not. Say whatever you want to convey in a tone and voice that will make your child understand its consequences.

It is quite obvious that your child will not refrain from all fiestas when all other people his/her age enjoy the luxury of junk food and similar. However, it is up to you to make him/her understand the true meaning of healthy food. Always make it a point to make the deal a perfect give and take. For example, you could let him/her eat pizza once a week provided he/she agrees to drink soup and eat a whole bunch of low carb food at least 2-3 days a week.

Be realistic in your expectations and let your child feel that they should take responsibility for their actions. Make it clear to them that you cannot watch over them or be after them all the time, so the responsibility of looking after their health is solely up to them.

It is also a very good idea to get your child involved in diabetes help groups for teenagers so that they will know there are other people going through the same situation and emotions that he/she is going through. Perhaps it will come as a ‘soothing experience’ of sharing daily up and downs, where they will find comfort and share their own ways and means of dealing with certain situations, in their own customized way.

Most important of all is to give your teenager enough liberty to make the choices of diet and exercise they want but also make them aware of the consequences they will face if they comply with the regulations needed and if they would not.

Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar is a rare incident that occurs simultaneously in somebody who’s already been diagnosed with diabetes. However, the case depends on the type of diabetes one may have. If a person with type II diabetes over exhaust himself, he is likely to suffer momentarily episodes of hypoglycemia. So if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, this is one good reason why you should watch how much exercise you get and how much you strain yourself.

Hypoglycemia develops when hepatic glucose output falls below the rate of glucose uptake by peripheral tissues. This condition may be a result of either the inhibition of hepatic glycogenolysis or glucogenolysis by insulin, or depletion of hepatic glycogen reserves due to malnutrition, fasting, exercises or advanced liver disease, or due to impaired gluconeuogenesis (following alcohol consumption etc.) The most common symptoms of hypoglycemia are associated with neurology because the brain consumes about 50% of the total glucose produced in the liver.

However, common external symptoms of hypoglycemia are hunger, perspiration, nervousness and shakiness, confusions, sleepiness, dizziness, feeling anxious and/or weak. If you have type II diabetes, you may experience episodes of hypoglycemia during sleep. At such point you might cry out or have nightmares, wake up from dampness of pajamas or bed sheets due to heavy perspiration or feel very tired, irritable and or confused when you wake up.

Another aspect of hypoglycemia is caused by diabetic medication because diabetic medications would try to level up the blood glucose in the body however; in return, due to life styles etc. the impact of the medication on the body may be too strong leading to a hypoglycemic state. However, there is no need to worry because usually, hypoglycemia is easy to treat. So if you are sure that you are having a hypoglycemic episode, quickly eat or drink something which is high on the glycemic index that will release energy fast. However, if hypoglycemia is left untreated it can lead to loss of consciousness and could even be lethal.

Do you know why diabetes is such a menace? It is because diabetes can affect many other organs in the body giving rise to complications. One such serious complication is diabetic retinopathy which affects eyes.

So if you have been diagnosed with diabetes here are few things you should do to take care of your eyes. Firstly, maintain your blood sugar levels as normal as possible. Secondly get your eyes checked by an eye care professional every year. Your vision does not have to be bad for you to get this examination done. The eye care professional will usually examine your eyes by dilating your pupils with the help of a liquid after which they can examine the back of your eyes.

In order to be in control of the situation, ask questions and tell your eye care professional to check for cataract or glaucoma specifically. Now here’s an exception to the rule, if you have gestational diabetes, you still need to see your eye care specialist every 3 months. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes and if you plan to get pregnant, seek advice from your physician, whether you need to have an eye examination done. One more golden rule, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, do not smoke!

When it comes to your eyes and diabetes, the complications can arise in four parts of the eye; namely the retina (the thin lining at the back of your eyes which sense the light entering in to your eyes), vitreous (the jelly like fluid), lens (that which focuses light on the retina) and the optic nerve (the main nerve which connects to the brain). But statistics show that retina is the most vulnerable.

So here are some tips to know if your retina has been damaged due to diabetes.

•	double or blurry vision
•	visions of rings, flashing lights or blank spots
•	pain and/or pressure building up in one or both eyes
•	dark and/or floating spots
•	blurring or blank vision when trying to see things from the corner of your eyes

However, it is important to remember that these symptoms are not absolute because some people would not get any symptoms yet would suffer from retinal damage due to diabetes.

You may think that diabetes is the worst medical condition on earth. Well, to be frank, it could be but only with your help. So if you are determined to be in control of the situation, you could still maintain balance and lead a perfectly normal life style.

How is it that you contribute to making your life a horror movie? Firstly, you may have heard a lot of ramblings going on about diabetes and what it can do to you. So without evaluating the logical and the illogical aspects, you feed your mind with some second hand gossip. This is the first step in to living a horror movie.

Every time you feed negative ideas to your mind, it associates diabetes with negativism. Remember that your mind act like a computer. So what you tell yourself is equally as important as the medications you may take. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, your mind retrieves its memory and alerts you in red capitals that it means negativity, danger and end of life. If you continue to believe it, you will once again be drawn towards negativity.

But if you can change the way you think and accept the condition with an open mind, things won’t be so difficult. So instead, assert to yourself that diabetes is a condition that you will control through dedication. Assert to yourself that you have the strength and sufficient courage to handle this different ball game. Now combine your powerful thoughts with actions such as changing your diet or getting regular exercise. In no time, you will incorporate the newly added components in to your life style without hassle.

One more important tip before we wrap off; make sure that you know every step of the way and feel comfortable about what you do. This applies both to your thinking as well as to medication. If you do not feel comfortable with your physician and if you find it difficult to trust him/her then, there’s no point continuing medication with the same physician because your psychological well-being affects your physical well-being. Ask questions from your physician and clarify your doubts because swallowing down pills without knowing the meaning or the usefulness of it won’t to do you much good, either.

What does type II diabetes and dementia have in common? Well, both conditions develop with the age. However, interestingly scientists have put forward a theory which links the prevalence of dementia in the presence of obesity (during the middle age) and diabetes (in later life).

Furthermore, studies done on animals have shown that reduction of neuronal insulin receptors give rise to similar conditions seen in Alzheimer’s disease due to neuro-degeneration. So it seems that we have a pretty strong case to say that there indeed exists a connection between diabetes and dementia.

Another study suggests that type II diabetes could be a main risk factor for Alzheimer’s diseases and vascular dementia. If the person also suffers from cardiovascular disease together with diabetes, then it’s double trouble as the risk factor for Alzheimer’s may be very high.

You may wonder how scientists have been able to conclude as such. Isn’t it a normal phase in aging to have deficit memory? Well, the answer is no. We tend to believe that losing memory is a part of aging because the prevalence in society is very high. However, in most cases, there is a cognitive and/or biological reason(s) behind it.

In order to work through dementia and determine the causes and possible treatments, practitioners use a laboratory dementia work-up where a complete blood sample, metabolic profile, rapid plasma regain, thyroid function tests, B12 and folate serum levels are tested. After this phase, any reversible condition will be immediately treated. If the case is related to diabetes, the best method is to control blood sugar levels through healthy diet which are low in glycemic index and high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. It is a common belief among scientists that elevated blood sugar levels contribute to dementia but the exact body mechanics to support this notion is yet to be discovered!

Many of us that are suffering from diabetes have tools that help us to determine our health at any particular time. At the top of these tools is our glucose meter, something that we can use in order to determine our sugar level, any time that we feel that it is necessary. Many of us which have to deal with diabetes and regulating our sugar level on a regular basis carry these glucose meters with us everywhere that we go. Since this is a somewhat sensitive instrument, however, it is necessary for you to make sure that it is operating properly all of the time.

The first thing that you need to do is to run a control up test from time to time to make sure that the glucose meter is operating properly. Typically, you get a few bottles of control solution whenever you first purchase your meter. If you did not get the control solution then you can pick some up at the drugstore in order to test your unit on a regular basis. Using the control solution is very simple. Just shake the bottle and apply a drop in the same way that you would apply a drop of blood to the test strip. Make sure that the readings are within the acceptable level which will be outlined on the side of the control solution bottle.

Another thing that you need to make sure that you are doing is taking care of your test strips properly. Many individuals tend to just leave these lying around and don’t really give them the proper care that they need. This can result in false readings to some extent which is something that you certainly do not want to have happen. As long as you keep them in a light proof container and make sure that you keep them free of moisture, they should do fairly well for you. If you have any doubts about the strips, just test them with the control solution that you got with your meter.
