Diabetes is a disease that has become quite common in the last few decades. But what could be the cause for the rise in the number of diabetics in the country? Primarily, the reason could be the sedentary lifestyles that most people lead. In addition to greater consumption of unhealthy foods such as various fast food, fizzy drinks and food rich in starch, lack of exercises is another major cause. How often do you find yourself spending hours at home in front of your television set or your personal computer rather than spending those hours either exercising or involved in activities outdoors? Even those who do work simply sit behind their desks all day without any real form of active workout sessions. This could have an adverse effect on your health in the long run. Diabetes is a disease that is not confined to a particular age group. Regardless of whether you are in your teens or in your late 40′s, anyone can be diagnosed with the disease.

It is important to point out here that diabetes has no cure. There are however several methods of treatment to help maintain blood glucose levels. Being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean that you cannot lead a normal, active life. You can continue to lead a normal life provided you make regular visits to the doctor, take the prescribed medication and watch your intake of food. This is where diabetes and nutrition information would come in handy.

It is your doctor who would be able to specify the treatment that would be best for you. This would typically include either oral medication or insulin injections or sometimes even a combination of the two. You should never try to take any of these drugs without the approval of a doctor. For those of you who also wish to take the help of diabetes and nutrition in the form of herbal remedies, you could try eating specific fruits or green leaves for example, which are known to maintain blood sugar levels.

Diabetes and nutrition is of great importance as the food you consume plays a vital role in maintaining blood glucose levels. In order to take diabetes and nutrition seriously, you must have a good meal plan so that you would know what food you can consume and in what proportions. Although there is no such thing as a specific diet for diabetics, it is best that you see a nutritionist in order to know what exactly your plan should include for diabetes and nutrition plan. For diabetes and nutrition plans, you would need to take a balanced diet, but one that is of low sugar, salt and carbohydrates.

Your diabetes and nutrition plan can include a mixture of fruits, raw vegetables, and one item of starch such as bread or pasta, yoghurt and so on.

It’s always best that you own one of the many diabetes testing equipment so that you can take your own blood sugar readings at home without having to visit a doctor. You can then know whether you need to change you diabetes and nutrition plan or leave it as it is.

Diabetes is one topic that seems to be in most of the conversations of today. Be it a doctor, a patient, a parent or a child, talk about diabetes sneaks its way into most conversations. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the word and this trend continues into the future. Fortunately for mankind, the public and doctors alike are now taking an interest in getting to know about this disease and ways of controlling it. Even though diabetes is a topic which has begun to be talked about from the recent times, this disease has a long history. Discovered as far back as in 1552 BC, it has been a threat to mankind from times even before that. It was discovered in 1870s by a French physician that a person’s diet and weight had a direct relationship to diabetes. Thus was the beginning of diabetic weight loss diets.

For a person suffering from diabetes, or for a person in the diabetes risk category, the diet is something that should be given a great consideration to. The diet should be even more highlighted in the case of obese diabetic patients as well as those suffering from obesity in general. When reading this a person might wonder why an obese diabetic patient has to follow specifically a diabetic weight loss diet. The answer to this query is simply that not only does the diet have to take into account the issue of weight, but also the diabetic condition in the body. A normal weight loss diet and a diabetic weight loss diet are different from each other and should be treated separately. Following a diabetic weight loss diet also depends on the type of diabetes you have. A diabetic weight loss diet should be followed by those suffering from type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to diabetes weigh loss diets, the first thing that should be mentioned is that skipping meals is not an option. Skipping meals will not only lead to overindulgence during other meals, but also drastic fluctuations in blood glucose levels. Having established that skipping meals is not a wise option when following a diabetic weight loss diet, we can now explore the main constituents and components of such a diet. Even though this diet is a weight loss diet, it should be nutritious and well balanced. Thus it should consist of food from all the food categories. The important thing at this point is to ensure that the foods from each of these categories are low in sugar levels.

The most important part of a diabetic weight loss diet is controlling the intake of carbohydrates with high glycemic index. Foods such as white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and certain fruits and vegetables should be avoided as they are capable of increasing the blood glucose levels rapidly. In place of these one can consume foods such as lentils, beans, broccoli, spinach and berries. Fiber rich foods such as oats, oat bran should also be made part of the diabetic weight loss diet. In addition to all these measures, drinking plenty of water and daily exercises are an important part of diabetic weight loss diets.

According to a survey conducted by the Diabetes Foundation of India and the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation (N-DOC) of New Delhi, the majority of kids in the country’s capital are obese. The survey indicated that 13% of these students were overweight or obese due to the consumption of unhealthy food.

The survey focused on 25 schools between 2007 and 2010 that were either private of funded by the government. Exactly 4,704 children in Jaipur were covered, and 2,380 were from private schools. The chief project officer of the Diabetes Foundation, Priyali Shah stated, “Obesity among school kids make them prone to diabetes, hypertension and stress in adulthood. It is caused by unbalanced diet and sedentary lifestyle of urban children.”

Students who were within the age of 14-17 were found to display a high prevalence of being either overweight or obese. The reason for this prevalence could be due to school hours, tuition time and also preparation for competitions. As more time is spent away from home and children having more freedom and pocket money, the focus is on food that is available in school canteens. The usual fare would include samosas, noodles, and burgers amongst other junk food. Dr Sailesh Lodha, a city-based endocrinologist believes that this rate of 13% is not that high when compared to other cities such as Allahabad, Agra, Delhi, Dehradun and Mumbai.

Lodha’s survey on 500 school kids across 8 schools, known as ‘Creating awareness on Obesity and Diabetes’, noted that the root cause for obesity is a sedentary lifestyle plus a lack of physical exercise.

The survey also found out that junk food, which is offered in most school canteens were exacerbating the situation for children. The majority of such junk food was less expensive thereby making it more accessible. Such food also required improper storage, making it less costly for schools.

According to German researchers, babies who may be facing a higher risk of diabetes due to genes or family history may not benefit from a gluten-free diet during the first year of their life. These new findings undercuts an earlier study where scientists claimed that babies who are exposed to gluten may develop Type 1 diabetes later on in life.

Gluten is a protein that is found in grains such as wheat where this protein makes bread chewy and gives dough its elasticity. Approximately 1% of Americans suffer from celiac disease where the body’s immune system reacts with gluten thereby leading to intestine damage.

According to the National Institutes of Health, every year in America, around 20 kids per 100,000 below 10 years of age are afflicted with Type 1 diabetes. In the current study, the German researchers followed 150 babies who had either one parent or sibling with Type 1 diabetes. Nearly half of the babies had gluten in their diet by the time they were six months of age. The other half of the babies was exposed to gluten only after their first birthday. When they reached age 3, three of the candidates developed Type 1 diabetes versus four who were from the group that were exposed to gluten much later.

Indications that the candidates had developed Type 1 diabetes were present in 11 children who were given gluten at six months of age, versus 13 who were first exposed to gluten when 12 months old. While some research may have shown that late exposure to gluten may lead to early development of celiac disease, the German scientists did not find any results to support this.

Additionally, as per the findings of the German study, delaying exposure to gluten does not seem to reduce the risk of developing diabetes or any early indicators of insulin problems.

According to research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, even a minute difference in diet could affect diabetes risk. In this particular study, which was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, there were 69 healthy but overweight candidates who were not afflicted by diabetes but were at risk of developing it, were placed on specific diets such as low-carb diets.

The diets included reductions in fat or carbs for a total of 8 weeks. Barbara Gower, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB and lead author of the study stated that “At eight weeks, the group on the lower fat diet had significantly higher insulin secretion and better glucose tolerance and tended to have higher insulin sensitivity.”

What is unique about this study is that weight loss was not taken into account. Rather the focus was on diet quality and not diet quantity. The participants involved in the study were fed the same amount of food necessary to retain their body weight.

The researchers considered small fluctuations in body weight during the analyses. The results indicated that reducing the daily consumption of fat to approximately 27% could help minimize their risk of diabetes over the long term. These findings were more relevant when it came to African-Americans.

African Americans who were on the diet that was low in fat indicated a large difference in insulin secretion when compared to those who were on low carbs. The participants in the study were on a low-fat diet that consisted of 27% fat and 55% carbs whereas; the participants on the low-carb diets were on 39% fat and 43% carbs. The results of this study are certainly significant, as per Gower, since there are certain groups who are at a higher risk of developing diabetes such as Native Americans, African-Americans, Latinos and the elderly.

The government in the Philippines is currently expanding the production of white corn, which is known to be low in the glycemic index, to boost food security and reduce the incidence of diabetes. According to Dr. Artemio M. Salazar, UPLB-IPB deputy director and National Corn RDE (Research, Development and Extension) Network head, producing white corn is not as capital-intensive as other crops since corn grows wherever there is rain.

The main focus is to provide a “mobile mini corn mill” to rural areas in the interior of the country. As Salazar states, “…there is a big demand for it because many Filipinos are now diabetics. And this is the perfect food for diabetics.”

The mobile corn mill costs a mere P100,000, which is much lower in price when compared to the high-capacity mills that are present in the market. While white corn will be promoted aggressively for daily nutrition and also livelihood in the rural uplands, this variety of corn will prove to be a health benefit amongst the residents in Metro Manila and even the other urban areas, which is known to have an alarming incidence of diabetes.

What is alarming is that while diabetes is on the rise so, too, is hypertension. According to a recent National Nutrition and Health Survey, 7.7 million Filipinos or 17.2 percent of the adult population suffer from hypertension. There is on 12 percent who are controlled as per the Philippine Heart Association. What this means is that there are approximately 6.8 million people who are in danger of developing fatal complications.

Since both diabetes and hypertension are inextricably linked, Health Secretary Enrique Ona reiterates that a healthy lifestyle should be considered, which takes into account physical activity and a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables along with foods that are low in the glycemic index, like white corn.

While certain studies have shown that the risk of diabetes and cancer increases with high fat diets, it is mostly the type of fat that could be the culprit. It has been understood that a diet that is rich in monounsaturated fats such as nuts, seeds and olive oil could prevent most of these diseases.

According to the latest Spanish study on diabetes, which was published in the scientific journal ‘Diabetes Care’ indicated that a Mediterranean style diet that includes olive oil helps to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. The risk of reducing diabetes is almost 50 percent when compared to a diet that is low in fat. At present, Type 2 diabetes is widely regarded as the most prevalent and the most preventable type of diabetes.

The Spanish study consisted of 418 candidates who were not afflicted by diabetes. Each candidate was arbitrarily given a Mediterranean diet with 1 liter of olive oil per week, a low fat diet or a Mediterranean diet with 30 grams of nuts per day.

It was only after 4 years that 17.9 percent of the candidates on the low fat diet developed diabetes; a mere 10 percent of the candidates following the Mediterranean diet with olive oil developed diabetes. Additionally, the two groups that were on the Mediterranean diet when compared with the low fat group illustrated that the incidence of diabetes reduced by 52 percent.

The results of this study were independent of body weight changes and physical activity while the diets were also devoid of calorie restriction. Scores of previous studies that have been conducted, have shown that the Mediterranean diet that is rich in olive oil has been a firm favorite of many doctors. The various components of the Mediterranean diet, chiefly olive oil, prevent Type 2 diabetes by improving insulin levels, blood lipid levels, and also blood sugar levels.

Weight Watchers of Las Vegas is providing a free program for kids. This new service takes place in tandem with its youth and family specialty meetings. This initiative serves to handle the issues of diabetes and obesity head on. Weight Watchers, which is the world’s foremost provider of weight management services, stated that this new launching of meetings is aimed at parents and children who were 10 years and above.

These meetings will assist families to better understand how food and exercise and how it would affect their child’s discernment of what constitutes a lifestyle that is healthy. The incidence of obesity in America has doubled in children and tripled in adolescents during the last 30 years.

With a rising number of children being afflicted with obesity and obesity-related medical issues such as Type 2 diabetes and abnormal cholesterol levels; it is becoming more and more significant that parents and caregivers have the proper access to tools that can help break this vicious cycle.

According to Tracie Patten, Nevada market manager for the American Diabetes Association, “Simply implementing a healthy diet and exercise plan can prevent and reverse Type Two diabetes in most cases”. She reiterated that the prevention of Type 2 diabetes is a reality that needs a proper course of action.

As per the American Diabetes Association, both diabetes and obesity are very much related. Eating healthily should be the prime focus for both children and adults so that obesity and Type Two diabetes along with its complications can be easily curbed. At present diabetes has affected close to 26 million children and adults with 79 million being the victim of pre-diabetes. It has been estimated by WHO that the number of Americans with diabetes is set to increase by a large margin to over 30 million by 2030.

At present there are many health centers in Canada including Edmonton, Vancouver, Montreal and Hamilton, which are looking at creating weight-loss surgery programs for those adolescents who are extremely obese. Initial results from currently ongoing studies illustrate that teens can lose one-third of their weight, on average, one year after such surgery. The good news is that such a procedure can even put diabetes into remission, even before children are discharged from hospital.

As per Dr. Thomas Inge, surgical director of the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, a study that involved 11 adolescents with Type 2 diabetes who were put through gastric bypass surgery had 10 of the candidates reverse their diabetic condition to a point where they could no longer be considered as being diabetic.

While Type 2 diabetes is certainly on the rise when it comes to adolescents, the question most people such as Dr. Stan Lipnowski, a Winnipeg pediatrician and member of the Canadian Pediatric Society‘s Healthy Active Living Committee, asks is whether gastric bypass surgery is the best suitable answer. Lipnowski suggests opting for surgery as the last possible resort after trying everything else.

In Canada, the rates of obesity in children have tripled within the last 25 years. There are approximately 26 percent of Canadian children, who are aged between 2 and 17 who are at present overweight or obese. Researchers from McGill University have found out that lasting weight loss through bariatric surgery can reduce the risk of death by almost 89 per cent versus no surgery within five years of follow-up. Another study conducted by the same teams showed that surgery can reduce the risk of cancer by 80 per cent. However, gastric bypass surgery does carry the risk of death as well.

As Dr. Jean Pierre Chanoine, a childhood obesity expert in the endocrinology and diabetes unit at B.C. Children’s Hospital states, while serious diabetic cases could lead to severe complications, gastric bypass surgery may be the only option.

According to a new global study that was distributed on Thursday, choosing the correct formula for infants could help avoid the onset of diabetes. The new research illustrated that if a transition is made from breastfeeding to a “highly hydrolyzed formula,” which will aid in easier digestion, the infant may actually face a lower risk of being afflicted by Type 1 diabetes. While Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent form of the disease, Type 1 diabetes could lead to fatalities unless it is treated with insulin.

Dr. Mikael Knip of the University of Helsinki who led the study, examined infants that had the HLA genotype. The latter leads these infants to face a higher risk of developing diabetes later on in life. First published in the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition, the trial highlighted positive results in infants that transitioned from breastfeeding to the hydrolyzed formula, which was easily digested.

The candidates by the time they were five years of age faced a 50 percent decrease in signs of diabetes compared to those children who transitioned from breastfeeding straight into foods such as fruit, cereals, or other kinds of formula.

The authors of the study wrote that when it came to type 1 diabetes, “Short-term breastfeeding and early exposure to complex dietary proteins, such as cow milk proteins and cereals…fruit, berries, and roots have been implicated as risk factors”. What is interesting to note is that the majority of infant formulas are made from a base of cow’s milk. This proves to be difficult for infants to digest before they finish their first year.

The research findings were later confirmed when the children reached ten years of age, via a follow-up analysis. At present, this trial is taking place in 77 centers in 15 countries across the world.
