Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke and What You have to know

Heart disease is typical in people with diabetes. The truth is, stats from the American Heart Association estimate that heart disease as well as stroke are responsible for two-thirds to three-fourths of the deaths amongst anyone with diabetes.

Whilst all those with diabetes have a bigger chance of developing heart disease, the disease is more readily available in persons together with type 2 diabetes.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-278 alignleft" title="heart disease" src="http://www.online-diabetes-information.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/heart-disease-150x150.gif" alt="heart disease"width="150" height="150" align="left" />The Framingham Study has been among the earliest pieces of data to show that individuals with diabetes tend to be vulnerable to heart disease compared to those people who did not have diabetes. The Framingham Study researched kinds of people, which include those with diabetes, to try to figure out the health and wellbeing risk factors for getting heart disease. It proved that multiple health elements — including diabetes — can escalate the possibility of developing heart disease. Apart from diabetes, other health conditions relating to heart disease include high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol levels, and also a family history of early heart disease.

The more health risks factors a person has for heart disease, the greater the possibilities that they should develop heart disease and also die because of it. Similar to anybody, people who have diabetes have an greater chances of dying from heart disease if they have additional health risk factors. Nevertheless, the chances of dying as a result of heart disease can be significantly greater in a individual with diabetes. So, while people with a single health risk factor, such as high blood pressure, could have a certain possibility of dying from heart disease, someone with diabetes has double or even quadruple the risk of dying.

For instance, one medical study found that people who have diabetes who had no other health risk factors for cardiovascular disease were 5 times more prone to die of heart disease than those without. Another medical study showed that people who have diabetes, regardless of the number of other heart disease risk factors, were as likely to have a heart attack as someone without diabetes who has already had heart disease.

Heart disease experts recommend that all people with diabetes have their heart disease risk factors treated as aggressively as people who have already had heart attacks.

What Generates Heart Disease in People who have Diabetes?

The most common source of heart disease in a person with diabetes is hardening of the coronary arteries or atherosclerosis, which can be a buildup of cholesterol in the blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrition to the heart.

This increase of cholesterol usually begins prior to rise in blood sugars that occurs in diabetes type 2.

In other words, heart disease generally has established itself before the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

When the cholesterol plaques can break apart or rupture, it makes blood clots and blocks the blood vessel. This can result in a heart attack. An identical process can occur in all of the arteries inside body, leading to shortage of blood to your brain, causing a stroke or insufficient blood to the feet, hands, or arms causing peripheral vascular disease.

Not alone are people with diabetes at higher risk for heart disease, they’re also at higher risk for heart failure, a critical disease in which the heart is struggles to pump blood adequately. This heart disease could lead to fluid build-up in the lungs that creates difficulty breathe, or fluid retention in other parts of the body (especially the legs) that causes inflammation.

As we know, there are hundreds of parameters involved in diabetics and age is only one of them. But it has more prominence than other factors as it has a direct and linear relationship with the decease. Researches show this linear relationship to have a positive trend with the age so in simple terms, when you grow old, you have more risk of getting diabetes.

It is found that diabetes is marginally common among the men than women. This margin becomes wider at higher age. From 1990, the records indicate that the number of diabetes patients has become doubled and it is reflected among all the age groups. But the amazing fact is that the percentage of increase for the age group from 20 to 39 years has hardly changed. The higher and prominent percentage is recorded in higher age groups than 39 years. So this increase does not have a linear effect but it has an exponential effect. There can be many reasons for this sharp increase of diabetes such as food, overweight problems, media etc. Due to media, more people tent to take medical tests for diagnosing diabetes and get in to records.

Age increase the risk of only type 2 diabetes as type two has many risk factors involved over type 1. But medical observations suggest that there have been number of cases reported where diabetes with children below 12 years of age. The theory behind this is that pancreas ages right along with us and does not pump insulin as efficiently as it did when we are younger. Also on the other hand, when our cells age, they become more resistant to insulin than they were younger. Both these issues cause type 2 diabetes to be increased with the age and both seems quite natural.

What is the right way to loss weight? It is an easy question to ask. Of course an easy question to answer also, if you are not responsible for the health of the patient. But if you are a diabetic or you have a close relative with the silent killer it is definitely a difficult question. Losing weight is always a challenging job, and when you have diabetes the magnitude of the challenge multiplies. The people with type 2 diabetes need to eat at regular intervals and it naturally makes you obese. When diabetic people go on diet their blood glucose levels drop drastically and it is fatal to health.

We can simplify the right way of losing weight for diabetic people as follows.

Get ready to change your eating habits permanently.

Consult your doctor and make an effective diet plan.

Combine exercise and medication in your diet plan.

Monitor blood glucose levels regularly and report to the doctor.

Make necessary changes in diet , medication and exercise regularly

You will soon end up with little medication and better health.

Let us elaborate these points:

Short, sharp diets are not suitable for diabetics even if those diets are based on healthy food; because the weight loss achieved by them is usually temporary. The more promising path is to change your eating habits. You need to fundamentally change your eating habits if you want to lose weight permanently. Be careful about juice fasting, which is not a good idea. Experts suggest cutting 500 calories a day. Cutting calories across the board; from protein, carbohydrates, and fat is the best way. The ideal strategy is to cut 50% to 55% of carbs, 30% of fat and 10% to 15% of protein.

Consult your doctor or a qualified dietician to plan your diets. Discuss with them to find more practical ways of dieting. There is no absolute ideal way that suits every one. One of the benefits of exercise is that it helps keep your blood sugar in balance, so you won’t have to cut as many calories. Walk an extra 20minutes a day, and you can eat a little bit more. So instead of cutting 500 calories, you can cut back just 200 or 300 calories, and still get excellent results in weight loss. You’ll also control your blood sugar. And the weight will be more likely to stay off if you lose it slowly, safely.

Have knowledge about each type of exercise and its effects on blood sugar.
Aerobic exercise can lower your blood sugar immediately. Weight lifting or prolonged strenuous exercise may affect your blood sugar level many hours later. When you are trying to loss weight when you have diabetes, you need to know about Low blood sugar level which is fatal at times. Low Blood Sugar (hypoglycemia) occurs when the amount of insulin in the body is higher than your body needs. Low blood sugar is common when people lose weight, because cutting calories and weight loss itself affect blood sugar levels. If you don’t reduce your insulin dosage or pills to match new blood sugar levels, you’ll be risking high blood sugar.

Finally you need to know that Weight Loss is not a diabetes cure but it is hugely beneficial as a diabetes symptom reliever. In most cases dropping 10% weight will lead to a 50% improvement with type2 diabetes.

You have been stuck by diabetes. Well, honestly speaking, no matter what every one must be saying, you must keep reminding yourself that now the time has come when you have to live a disciplined, diet restricted and healthy life with healthy diet and work outs.

Now no more of binging into alcoholic drinks with friends and eating fast-food or junk food for you. Don’t worry, no one is asking you to live like a saint; nothing so drastic is really needed. All that you have to do is avoid recklessness. Well know diabetes is called the silent killer. So you have to ward off the attacks of this silent killer with discipline, combined with medication and exercises of course.

You must know that if you have diabetes it means your pancreas isn’t producing sufficient insulin hormone. Since they are not producing sufficient amount of it the glucose level in your blood goes up because it could not be converted into energy. This affects your body system and eventually you are diagnosed with diabetes. It is here that exercise plays a very important role for you. When you do exercises then there is increase in the blood circulation in the body which affects the sugar level in your blood stream.

When you have diabetes your arms and legs are the most affected parts of your body. Medical research has proved that in these two places the blood circulation is most affected by the variations in your blood glucose level.

In your type 1 and type 2 diabetes when the blood glucose is at high levels, exercise can lower it. As a consequence you have to take fewer medicines and accordingly the side affects which you have to face because of these medicines, are also reduced. The cholesterol level in your blood also goes down and the blood pressure is also controlled. Research has proved that if you have diabetes the chances of you getting a stroke or a heart attack are really high.

Aerobics exercises have been found to be very useful in reducing the fat in your body and these exercises are interesting too. It has been found that they help in the absorption of glucose by the body and also storing of energy in the muscles. Leave alone aerobics, even simple exercises like walking helps you tremendously. If you have the vigor for it then exercises such as bicycle riding, gardening and swimming can also be very helpful.

You see the basic idea is to make you work hard, to make you do some strenuous activity. When you exert pressure on you body and push it to perform better, it does, and for doing so it takes up more glucose which had been lying dormant.

If you want to live a better and fruitful life in spite of suffering from diabetes you must start exercising today, you will see that you feel better and the overall quality of your life has improved. Thus exercise and diabetes are closely linked and go hand in hand. Leave out one and the other troubles you.

People who suffer from Diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2 can benefit from regular exercise. The three most important things used to control Diabetes are diet, exercise and medication. All these must be integrated into the lifestyle of the diabetic to control his blood glucose/sugar and the dose of insulin he may need to stabilize it. Regular exercise is equally important as medication and a healthy diet for controlling blood sugar levels.

Regular exercise can help your body respond better to insulin. Exercise and diabetes are closely related. In case of diabetes (both types) exercising can improve your circulation, especially in your arms and legs where people with diabetes generally have problems.

Exercise can lower glucose in blood level and possibly reduce the amount of medication (insulin) you need to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Exercise can also help reduce your cholesterol and high blood pressure that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. If you are diabetic you are more prone to these ailments.

An exercise in diabetes also helps to reduce stress that can raise your glucose level. In some people exercises combined with a proper diet, can control Type 2 Diabetes without the need for medications (insulin). Aerobic exercise increases insulin sensitivity by decreasing body fat. It helps in increasing glucose uptake and storing by the muscles.

Any kind of physical activity that increases your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes and if carried out on a regular basis will be beneficial. Walking is the most safe, valuable and convenient exercise for all kind of diabetics.

Depending upon a person’s abilities, many other types of exercises can burn calories and bring about health benefits. These include swimming, stationary bicycle riding, gardening etc. But before taking up any kind of vigorous exercises you should consult your doctor first.

Just medication (taking insulin) is not enough to help a diabetic live a full life. Both exercise and proper nutrition are essential to control diabetes. Exercise can help increase your life span and improve its quality. Often it seems easier to pop a pill or even take a shot than to put on your walking shoes and hit the trail. In fact sticking to an exercise program can be a challenge for anyone. But the fact is that a work out, in combination with healthy nutrition, is one of the best things to do to if you have diabetes.

However you must remember to measure your blood-glucose level prior to and after exercise. It is essential to closely monitor your blood glucose level when you have diabetes. Very often you will see the results instantly. You will see that the blood glucose level is at a healthy count after an exercise regime even though you had not taken the regular dose of insulin.

You should bring fun and diversity in your diabetic exercise regime, listening to music is a great idea. It keeps your mind away from the monotony of the job. Family support and exercising with someone is also helpful.

Now that you have been diagnosed with diabetes it is very important for you to maintain an exercise and heath regime because glucose and insulin in your blood are directly related to exercises. You must take precautions before exercising and consult your doctor to know about your diabetes and exercise.

Your exercise regime depends on the glucose level in your blood and the amount of insulin that you are taking and its effects and vice versa. However, do use an ID tag to indicate that you are diabetics so that you may receive appropriate treatment in emergency cases.

You should start with stretches and warming up exercises for at least five minutes before and after your workout. You must start gradually with a low-impact and simple exercise such as walking, swimming, or biking. You should never start abruptly but start with five minutes of exercise a day and increase this duration gradually. You should avoid muscle building heavy exercises.

If you are an insulin user then you should exercise after eating high carbohydrate food because insulin level and exercise are closely related. You must test your blood sugar before, during and after exercising. But you must not exercise when your blood sugar is more than 240. Since you are diabetic you cannot do just about any exercise. It is important for a diabetic to keep his abilities as well as limitations in mind before starting any diabetic exercise regime.

Diabetes is caused when the pancreas does not produce enough or absolutely no insulin at all. Diabetes can also be caused when the insulin produced is ineffective.

Diabetes can be of three kinds. The type1 diabetes, the type 2 diabetes and the gestational diabetes. The causes of diabetes in these three vary moderately. Let us look into their causes in detail.

The first type, that is the type 1 diabetes is said to be caused when the cells in one’s pancreas tend to get damaged, which causes it to have great insulin deficiency. This is believed to be a result of the so called autoimmune reaction, when your body destroys the cells itself.

This reaction may be caused due to bacterial infections, exposure to chemicals that are food borne, reaction of certain viruses and intake of cow’s milk during young infancy. However, these type 1 diabetes causes are just hypotheses, and not yet medically proved as such.

The next type of diabetes, that is the type 2 diabetes may be caused because of insulin resistance (failure of certain cells in the body to react to insulin), which causes over production of insulin, thus exhausting the pancreatic insulin producing cells. The type 2 diabetes causes may also include lack of sufficient insulin in the body or manufacture of inefficient insulin. These are usually caused with the increase in one’s age, too much of physical inactivity, or obesity.

Causes of gestational diabetes are not very well known. However, it is thought to be caused when during pregnancy the production of certain hormones blocks the functioning of insulin. What causes diabetes in this case is incapability of the mother’s body in producing enough of extra insulin to counteract this effect.

It is usually noticed that when the mother is over thirty five years of age, is obese, has had a stillbirth in her late pregnancy previously, or had given birth to an abnormal baby or a large baby this type of diabetes sets in.

One the most widespread causes of diabetes, that is common for all three types of diabetes is the patients hereditary.

In type 1 diabetes if both the parents have diabetes, then there are high chances of the children carrying the disease as well. Hereditary also acts as a diabetes cause in twin children, when one child has type 1 diabetes. The chances of the other child carrying the disease increases in this case by up to 40-50%.

It is said that if both the parents suffer from type 2 diabetes then it is almost certain that all their children will suffer from diabetes. Also, in case of twin children, if one of the twins suffers from type 2 diabetes, then almost certainly the other child will also carry the disease.

Hereditary is also a major cause of the gestational diabetes, when the parents suffer from it. What causes diabetes is the fact that the offspring may carry the problem in his or her genes.

You may wonder what exactly the term pre diabetes means. Pre diabetes is actually the stage before diabetes. When you are at this stage, your blood glucose level is slightly higher than normal though medically speaking you don’t have diabetes yet. Pre diabetes leads to type 2 diabetes within 3 years in 11% of the cases. At times it may take up to 10 years too.

Pre diabetes is tested by doing a Fasting Plasma Glucose test. It measures the level of blood glucose in your blood after you have gone without food for at least eight hours. This test can be used for detecting both, pre diabetes and diabetes.

Lose Weight With Dr. Seigal Special Cookie Diet.
</div

Another test for diagnosing pre diabetes and diabetes is Oral Glucose Tolerance test. For this test you go without food for eight hours and two hours before the test you take a glucose based drink.

Sometimes pre diabetes is referred to as “Impaired Glucose tolerance” or “IGT” or even “Impaired Fasting Glucose Tolerance” or “IFGT”. The doctors name it on the basis of the test that they have conducted to determine the pre diabetes. Hence pre diabetes and IGT and IFGT are the same things.

Pre diabetes may lead to stroke and heart attack. However all the ill effects of pre diabetes can be minimized with proper care. You can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by doing moderate exercises and losing modest weight loss.

You must concentrate on losing weight. Even if you can’t achieve your ideal weight, you should not lose heart. Remember, a loss of 10-15 pounds also matter.

Moderate exercises like walking 5 days in a week, for just 30 minutes each day can go a long way in preventing diabetes. You must try to maintain normal blood pressure. It is important because if you have pre diabetes your chances of heart diseases and other cardiovascular problems is at least 50% above normal.

Your diet for pre diabetes condition should consist of eating more of grains, starchy vegetables, beans and minimum of sweets, fats and alcohol. There is a food pyramid to guide you and you should try and follow it. At the bottom of the pyramid is the low calorie food and at the top is the high calorie food. So if you have eaten something from the high calorie group then you must balance your intake by eating something from low calorie group. A lot depends on your weight loss program and your lifestyle too.

You should try and eat more of carbohydrate rich food like wheat, oats and rye along with peas, potatoes and beans. You may also opt for vegetables like chicory, spinach, cabbage, tomatoes etc. Fruits like grapes, bananas pears peaches etc fall in the next category.

You should have low fat dairy products and have lean meats, fish and poultry. You should have small portions and cut off fat meat and avoid potato chips, cookies, candy and cakes etc. It is best to work with a registered dietician and prepare a chart according to your needs.
